Whenever I hear old doo-wop records I like to pick out the background nonsense syllables they always sang. It occurred to me that some of the sounds were parts of speech in Spanish, so I set off trying to fit some into a tune. That's where all this "La La" stuff came from.

The two verses pretty much have the same meaning - one's in English and the other Spanish. Translations are difficult, especially to capture some sense of rhyme in there. Mí amigo (and amazing bilingual poet) E. M. Test helped me with this translation.

It's partly a song about the moon, and also about a little girl named "Luna" who really needs to get to sleep.

The little voice at the top of the Ladybug One version is a friend from one of the schools where I play music. We had been practicing some simple Spanish and he says "Luna is the Spanish word for moon."
