I co-wrote this lullaby, which is sung in Hindi, with Deobrat Mishra. Debu -- his nickname -- is a classically trained Indian musician and vocalist, and travels through the Northwest once a year doing concerts.

I love playing with Debu and we have written a handful of songs together relatively quickly. It's nice....we sit down with a guitar and write a song. It feels easy.

For this song, since I was writing children's songs, I asked Debu to think about singing for his young children who he is away from for long periods of time. This is what came out. As I remember, we wrote the song and then immediately recorded the version that ended up on Ladybug One. We didn't have much of an arrangement, we just faced each other and improvised through the song.

Aunty Gairola and her niece helped me translate the song. They taught me that the Hindi word Lohri (pronounced "low-ree") means lullaby, Chanda means moon, & Nindiya is sleep. I found it interesting that Hindu culture considers the moon to be masculine ("Uncle Moon"), whereas in the west the moon is considered feminine.
