about

(Written March 25, 1997)

Originally called O Cheerio, the idea for this song occurred to me on the front steps of my house in Virginia.

I was eating cereal out of a big black bowl. As I finished I tipped the bowl to my mouth to drink down the remaining milk -- You know the technique! It surprised me to see my reflection in the bottom of the bowl, and it gave me a little giggle.

This front porch experience inspired the chorus. I thought it would be funny to try and spin a story around the idea told from the perspective of a spider. Over time the lyrics have changed, and might keep changing.

If you listen closely (or just read the credits in the album artwork) to the Ladybug One version, you can tell that there's quite a few instruments and players in the mix.

The children's recording session was pretty funny at times. The whole room cracked up after little Henry said his beautiful opening line :"Spiders in my breakfast and now they're inside me and they're in my head and I can't get them out." I really liked some of the genuine laughter sequences, especially at the song's fadeout, so decided to keep some of those in the final mix.

When we were recording the rhythm tracks in a basement studio in NE Portland, I went snooping around a back room looking for a table to set some gear up on. I opened a door and found Tony's Casio Keyboard vault -- he has a closet full of 80s style keyboards that you wouldn't believe. As I remember there are 5 different keyboards used in this version, including a pastel pink and green keyboard, a Casio SK1 (which samples your voice), and a toy piano we referred to as "The Jaymar."

Also buried in that version is the "wind wand" -- those musical tubes where you grab one end and spin the other end around to create the noise. You can hear it enter the song right at the transition to the "itsy bitsy spider" part. Gavin actually plays two part harmony on the wind wand.

And that's also three part kazoo harmony, just for fun. I wanted to put kazoo in Spiders as a reference to the instrument's history. In my research for this album I learned that the earliest ancestor of the kazoo comes from the African continent where it used to be made out of an animal's horn. The horn had a hole drilled through the side and spider's eggs were mushed up and squashed into the hole. When a player hummed through the horn, the spider's eggs would vibrate the air inside the horn to make a sound very similar to the modern kazoo. So spiders and kazoos are forever tangled up in each other's web.

lyrics

Whenever you’re looking for me
I'll be at the bottom of a bowl of cheerios

Whatever is cooking for me
We’ll meet at the or-ee of an oreo
Or maybe

I’ll meet you in the middle
Of a peanut butter pickle o
Uncle Freddie SpagettI made his way to baby toe
Sift me out of flour
Pour me out of cheerios
But I’ll meet you in the middle of
A peanut butter pickle o

Whenever you’re looking for me
I’ll be at the bottom of a bowl of cheerios
Whenever you’re looking for something to eat
Beat you to the bottom of a bowl of cheerios

Maybe Baby Broccoli fell out of the alphabet
soggy swampy lumpy me
Kissing Mary Macaroni
Spiders in my breakfast
Now there’s spiders inside me

Sorry so unlucky to
Now have spiders inside you
Holy moly macaronI
Spiders in you tickling
Spiders in your breakfast
Now there’s spiders inside you
Spiders in my breakfast
Now there’s spiders inside me

Whenever you’re looking for me
I’ll be at the bottom of a bowl of cheerios
