about

This song was written between March - June 2008.

Another song written on the ukulele. I began plucking the melody to this song out in the airport on a trip home from HawaiI .

The melody was stuck in my head, so I wrote a bunch of verses on the airplane. And being up in that plane probably had something to do with how the song's story unfolded.

After writing the song I had to change the key from C to Bb. Some of those high notes were too high!

I think the turning point of the song is during the bridge when the bird looks up for the first time and sees the possibility of the sky. I was trying out ways to create contrast in this section of the song so the time signature changes from 4/4 to 3/4, and the chords get all colorfully chromatic.

lyrics

Tap and peck
Break the egg
Shell I can
Open it
'Cause it's time
To see what's outside

Take a rest
In the nest
Lift my head
To the edge
See the ground
It's a long way down

Whoever heard of a bird afraid of heights?

Way up high
Gonna cry
I'm in such
A dangerous
Place caught like
A tree tangled kite

Birds out there
And the air
Planes don't care
I am scared
Wish that I Just stayed inside

Whoever heard of a bird afraid of heights?
Sounds absurd but the world is made of all kinds

But I'm always looking
down at the ground
and I don't see the sky
But then it fills my eyes
For the first time

I think I might
Open my
Wings out wide
Going to
Reach the sky
I might as well try

Face my fear
Disappears
Catch my breath
Effortlessly
Fly up
Under the sky
