about

(Written Nov 2001 - Feb 2002)

Bag of Never came from a dream. It was an unusual, open-ended dream, but pretty dark.

The dream begins with a dream-camera shot of an abandoned mine shaft, like something out of an old Western movie. A person steps into the frame and squats in the opening of the mine. He picks up a handful of dirt and examines it closely. He realizes that there is no more life in the soil, that all the wealth has already been extracted. He understands he must leave. Looking over his shoulder something catches his eye. Leaning against a wooden post supporting the mine shaft opening is a "Bag of Never." He picks up the Bag of Never and leaves.

In this dream the "Bag of Never" was an object that just appeared out of nowhere. It's one of those personal dream symbols that arrives spontaneously complete out of the subconscious, like an apple falling off a tree. Although I didn't know exactly what this meant, it did make sense in the context of what was happening in my life at the time: that some changes needed to be made. Right away.

I did the only thing I really know what to do with my dreams: write an obscure song about it.

In the Birds Falling From The Sky version I added a little whispered section and buried it somewhat inaudibly in the mix. This whispered part was improvised and paraphrases the dream. If you care, here is what is whispered:

"In the dream sequence, the entrance to an old abandoned mine shaft. Our hero steps into the picture, squats, picks up a handful of dirt. He looks at it deeply and realizes -- understands -- there's no more wealth or life in the soil. He must leave. He picks up the bag of never and...."

I thought my friend Chrisopher Blue would fit in well on this song, so I asked him to sing a little on the Birds Falling version. He ended up doing some spoken-word improvisation in the instrumental section which eventually turned into what you hear in the version on the album. We took a similar approach with A Couple More Raindrops on the previous album Underneath Your Umbrella. Check out Chrisopher Blue (no "t" in his name!) if you can find him.

lyrics

I'm sick I'm drunk
And all I got
Is this t-shirt
That smells like you

It ain't right
What I do
I sit around
And think of you

3 a.m.
Awake again
Nothing to do
But think of you

I want to bleed your stones
With sticks and bones,
Lick your tooth,
And choke on you

I doubt you'll understand
So I'll whisper it again
Drop that handful of dirt
Pick up this bag of never
I doubt you'll understand
So I'll whisper it again
This love is bent and broke
This'll never work
