about

This song took a long time to write and was written in 2009 - 2010.

I love trees, and I love climbing them. Always have. Although I took a long break from it, I've been known to disappear up a tree now and then.

When I was a kid I remember climbing up into the apple tree in my backyard. It was a place to get away from everyone, and to think about stuff. No one knew I was there. It was a safe place.

I purposely tried to make the first verse of the song elusive, so that you wouldn't exactly know what the song was about until the chorus. The reference to the "slow dance" is about being in a tree when the wind gets blowing!

I wanted to write a bridge to this song, but didn't know how to come at it. I ended up climbing a bunch of trees near my house and hanging out up there, thinking about it. That's when I realized that you don't have to climb to the top of the tree. You just go up as high as you feel like going. And then you come back down.

lyrics

Kick off my shoes
Pull myself up by my own hands
A breeze blows through
Everything moves and we slow dance
Above me only clear blue sky
So good to be outside
I forget sometimes
That I need to play
Everyday

And all I need are my bare feet
climbing up to the top of this apple tree

I'm all alone
And looking down between my feet
No one knows
No one else except this tree
Remember when you leave the ground
You gotta come back down
Just hold on and breath
And feel this tree holding back onto me

And all I need are my bare feet
climbing up to the top of this apple tree

You don't have to climb up to the top
You just gotta know when to stop

All I need are my bare feet
climbing up to the top of this apple tree
Wood and dirt and sky and earth
Beaks and birds and leaves and worms
And all I need are my bare feet

Kick off my shoes
And look up at you
In my bare feet
