about

(Written 1999)

Call This Sleep has been an important healing song for me. It helped me bring about closure to the death of someone who was very close to me -- my dog Callahan. The song used to be called "Callahan's Song."

Closure, for me, is about coming to terms with something. And being able to move on with life. For me, writing things down has a way of helping to bring that closure about. A few tears never hurt either.

Call This Sleep is related to another song titled Annie Didja Go? Annie (named in Call This Sleep) was Callahan's sister.

I have a raw alt version of this song that I want to release someday. My friend Bob Antone played some wicked fiddle on that recording.

lyrics

Emaj7 - AMaj7
I put one last kiss on her cold head
And it's still her though her body's dead
Please don't try to comfort me
Because I could never call this sleep
Annie do you know where your sister's gone?
Do you know why you're sleeping all alone?
I break down when these thoughts arrive
This terrible sadness is still stuck inside

Gm - A - B - B
So please take this weight off of me
Please take all this sadness away

I been out in the freezing cold
Praying and crying and digging a hole
I wrapped a blanket around my girl
And then covered her up with frozen dirt
No I don't know where it is she'll go
Maybe to heaven but not in this hole
I know with time this all will pass
But I'm so sick of kissing her photographs

So please take this weight off of me
It's overwhelming
Please take all this sadness away
And bring back yesterday
