Getting Night Now

:: THIS SONG'S STORY ::

(Written Sept 2012 - June 2014)

I thought I was going to write a simple little bedtime song for my son. A going-to-bed-let's-brush-our-teeth kinda thing. Then this song comes out.

I don't mean to shrug off the writing of a song by saying it just "comes off." It's a process. You start somewhere, maybe you have an idea where you'd like it to go. But then you get surprised sometimes. Sometimes the song doesn't go where you want or expect it to. Those are some of my favorites because it's a process of discovery.

My cat Tania sings on this song. If you listen closely you can hear her in the 2nd verse after the line "A tiny tummy growls on a skinny hungry cat."

lyrics

:: LYRICS ::

It ends up night but it's light at first
Evening's like morning but it happens in reverse
The sun drops into the west without a sound
And birds fly home 'cause it's getting night now

Slip to sleep
But don't fall too fast
Life's a dream
But don't let it pass you by

A tiny tummy growls on a skinny hungry cat
Trees are losing color turning into black
A little puff of smoke from the chimney on a house
Supper's on the table 'cause it's getting night now

Slip to sleep
But don't fall too fast
Life's a dream
But don't let it pass you by

Climb the golden stairs and find my toothbrush
I'm winding down raccoons are waking up
The world grows dark now that night is laying down
Crawling into bed 'cause it's getting night now

Slip to sleep
But don't fall too fast
Life's a dream
But don't let it pass you by

So I stare and I wonder
About these stars I am under
In between joy and sorrow
Yesterday and tomorrow
Another day another one
Another trip around the sun
Another dusk another dawn
Another dream another yawn
Hold on tight or it's gone
Hold on tight before it's gone
