I Can Be The Princess came about while my sister, nieces and nephew were visiting. Our two families were sitting around singing silly songs together and this song happened. Everyone had a chance to answer the question "If you could be anything what in the world would you be?" and their answers became the backbone of the song. When it came time to record the song I took to social media to crowd source some additional ideas from fans.
I like the idea of a male voice singing "I can be the Princess" because it challenges some of the stiff gender roles we tend to fall into. For the same reason I like to wear pink at shows to subtly suggest that a person can confidently be their-self, whoever they feel they are and whoever they may be. Be yourself because you are beautiful that way.
I had completely forgotten about the song until I rediscovered a random recording the kids and I made the day we wrote Princess. The original chorus had something to do with poo (three of the seven writers were preschoolers!) so I flushed that idea and wrote a new chorus. By the way, my big sister Lara is the Violin.
A little note on some of the sounds on the recording.
Every once in a while I'll have to sneeze while the mics are recording. Over the years I've accumulated a nice library of myself sneezing. I busted out a handful of these audio files to sound design the Sneezy Queen character in the second verse of the song. Also featured is our now deceased and beloved cat Tania meowing (the chatty cat), and of course the Pacific Tree Frog who closes the song with a few lovely croaks.
lyrics
I can be the princess, the princess, the princess
I can be the princess and you're the violin
You can be the violin, the violin, the violin
You can be the violin and I can be the bird
I can be the singing bird, the soaring bird, the flying bird
I can be the singing bird and you're the yellow flower
If you could be anything
What in the world would you be?
If I could be anything
I would still want to be me
You can be the wizard, the wizard, the wizard
You can be the wizard and I can be the queen
I can be the sneezy queen, the sneezy queen, the sneezy queen
I can be the sneezy queen and you can be the cat
You can be the magic cat, the tabby cat, the chatty cat
You can be the magic cat and I can be the clown
If you could be anything
What in the world would you be?
If I could be anything
I would still want to be me
You can be the golden sun, the golden sun
You can be the golden sun and I can be the sky
I can be the blue sky, the blue sky, the blue sky
I can be the blue sky and you're the wet rainbow
You can be the rainbow, the rainbow, the rainbow
You can be the rainbow and I can be the mud
I can be the sticky mud, the sticky mud, the sticky mud
I can be the sticky mud and you can be the tree
You can be the apple tree, the apple tree, the apple tree
You can be the apple tree and I can be the worm
If you could be anything
What in the world would you be?
If we could be anything
You could still be you and I'll be me
You can be the princess this time you be the princess
You can be the princess and I can be the frog
