This song was written between July and December 2009.

On a day off from tour, we visited my friend Brian at his lovely beach front house. He had a long staircase down to the beach so we all found our way to the water after breakfast. I probably had my baritone ukulele with me, but I can't really remember.

Brian's niece Morgan was with us and she must've been 4 years old at the time. She and I got to talking and wondering how many rocks there were on the beach. Neither of us knew the answer so we started counting and this little song practically started singing itself. The other verses about the leaves and the stars were added later.

I wanted to play with different ways of counting in songs and these were some of my ideas. There were more, but I'm going to save them for another song...
