about

Mostly written October 10, 1996

Without trying I've written about nine songs for my dear old friend Mike. But this isn't completely one of them. For purposes of this song story my old friend Mike will be referred to as "The Other Mike."

Because in Virginia I had another friend named Mike (imagine that!). Even then I couldn't remember his last name -- it began "Lemoin..." something -- so I just called him Mike Lemon. I had a phone number list hanging on the wall, and his was one of the numbers posted.

On the way to the shower one afternoon the name "Mike Lemon" caught my eye at the bottom of the phone list. As I was scrubbing down I started humming this little melody:

"Hey Mike Lemon bomb
daka da da dah
dah da da da."

So Lemonbomb was born in the shower.

I could have probably kept the song in straight 4/4 time (if this makes sense) by making the last "gone" overlap with the next "hey." This is what I did on the intro of the 4-track version on the Lemonbomb album. The Birds Falling version keeps that "extra beat" in the intro, just like in the shower.

I later wrote the verses and the rest of the chorus. This time for The Other Mike.

Over time The Other Mike and I developed a theory of existence we called "puddle theory." I cannot remember the full details but we came up with it by drinking a bunch of beer and staring into puddles one long ago night. The "too far gone" is part of that hopelessly lost puddle theory.

The words:

"Into the deep blue
We all strain our eyes
We lied on our backs
And saw angels
In the sky"

Are borrowed from another song called Woodpecker - the last track on the album Lemonbomb. Yes I plagiarize myself sometimes.

lyrics

Hey Mike Lemonbomb
Can't you carry on
Cause you're too gone

I wear a shirt the same color as my mouth
Pinned down to sleep on your butterfly pillow
When he's alone at least he's by himself
And he got sick from kissing you

I heard there's a net up over your head
To keep you safely inside your bed and body
I suspect nobody else wanders
And I take the time to consider you

Into the deep blue
We all strain our eyes
We lied on our backs
And saw angels

A pair of angels up over your head
They may've been mosquitos no I ain't sure
And I suspect nobody else wonders
If you cared and your wandered
I know you know
I take the time to consider you

Hey Mike Lemonbomb
Can't you carry on
Cause you're too gone
Hey Mike Lemonbomb
Can't you carry on
Cause you're too far gone
