about

Written December 1999

I really love that pre-dawn time of day when everything becomes blue in the half light. I've done a few paintings during that time of day and I've always called it the "morning blue."

For me, Morning Blue is about the different degrees of gravity between two people.

What happens when the balance of love is unequal? When one person is more attracted to the other than the other is back? Now let the black night spill in through the open window and wait there thinking about everything until morning comes.

I don't know if you've ever thought of songs as having colors. What color is this or that song? Ironically for me when I close my eyes and listen to Morning Blue it sounds more like a red crayon. I think that has something to do with the key (or pitch) of A Major and a case low-level synesthesia.

The bridge section ("you said you'd throw...") was originally written for another song called Fingertip Touch sometime in 1997. The melody and music is totally different, but the words were only minimally changed. That song Fingertip Touch goes:

"You said you'd throw your paints away
Put them in an ocean, no the letter didn't say
It'll all be expained someday
He says he thinks of me on Sundays"

I don't want to give too much away but in Morning Blue the narrator is asking for more to be thrown into the ocean than just some paints.

lyrics

F#m - A
Karson crazy mixing gin with watermelon
She stand naked doing dishes wedding ring
In the kitchen on the sink

A - E7 - F#m - D - F#m - E
Sitting beside her
Might as well be a spider
Love please don't touch me
I'd love you to be right
Here in this room
To paint the morning blue
Blue in the dark of the night
I leave the door open wide
To let the night inside
I'd love to have you here right
Here in this room
To paint the morning blue blue

In the late dark of the night
I leave the door open wide
To let the night inside
I'd love to have you right here
In this room to paint the morning blue

A - G#m - B - C#m7 - D - E
But you said you'd throw it away
Put it in the ocean your letter didn't say
You said you'd throw it all away for me
Put it in the ocean your letter didn't say
It'll all be explained someday
