about

This song is performed on the Mbira -- a thumb piano traditionally played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe.

My teacher Erica Azim connected me with Fradreck Mujuru, the man who built the instruments that I bought. I picked up Fradreck from the airport one day and showed him around Seattle for a few hours.

The Mbira is traditionally used for sacred music. The song Please Don't Leave Us is a prayer to my ancestors, to stand behind me, to help me be more compassionate, and to show me how to grow into an elder someday.

As a white man playing this indigenous African instrument I wanted to be sensitive cultural appropriation, especially when including the instrument on a commercially released album. I remember sitting in the grass at the park and I asked Fradreck if it was okay if I composed and recorded songs on the Mbira. He asked me to show him what I meant. I played him this song and he listened intently. When I finished, after a nervous silence, he said "Yes this is good. This is okay."
