:: THIS SONG'S STORY ::

(Written 2010 - Jan 2014)

Sing In The Sun was a throw-away song. I wrote it and put it away. I just didn't think it was worth singing a whole lot.

I remember sitting on the porch. A few friends were around and the sun was doing that thing where you can see its bright, round shape behind the clouds but it was still a cold and greyish day. The idea was that if we all sang together maybe we could "sing in" the sun, or call it through the clouds towards us with our song.

The song was never completed. I wrote the B Part ("Yesterday was grey with rain….") but the words were awkwardly different:

Clouds can't hold us back no more
Your love shining on everyone
(Something something) lift your voice
And everyone sing in the sun shine

So I put the song away and didn't look at it for a few years. I'm not sure exactly, I was probably thumbing through an old notebook and found the song, but I started working on it again. It took me a while to get the words for that B Part right, probably because of the odd phrasing and rhyme scheme. I remember being jet-lagged in New Jersey, watching the rusty sun rise, when I discovered the words "Sun rise up shine in my eyes." And they seemed to set up that final line "And everyone sing in the sun shine."

When I was in the studio recording the Sundrops album, I almost forgot to include the Bridge section of the song ("In the sun, sun sun"). It was a good thing I didn't know the lyrics at the time because I had to pull out the notebook where the words were scribbled and re-discovered that part of the song.

:: LYRICS ::

We can make the sun come out
We can make the sun come out
Singing in the sun
Sunshine

Rolling in the dandelions
Rolling in the dandelions
Singing in the sun
Sunshine

We can make the sun come out
We can make the sun come out
Singing in the sun
Sunshine

Yesterday was grey with rain
A beautiful day has begun
Sunrise up shine in my eyes
And everyone sing in the sunshine

We can make the sun come out
We can make the sun come out
Singing in the sun
Sunshine

Kiss your face and kiss your eyes
Kiss your face and kiss your eyes
Singing in the sun
Sunshine

Yesterday was grey with rain
A beautiful day has begun
Sunrise up shine in my eyes
And everyone sing in the sunshine

In the sun
In the sun
In the sun
In the sun

We can make the sun come out
We can make the sun come out
Singing in the sun
Sunshine
