about

(Written July 27, 1996)

Have you ever stopped to look at the brown-haired woman on the packaging for Sun-Maid Raisins? I dated her for a short time.

To this day I still think my old girlfriend N looked a lot like the Sun Maiden. This song was obviously written around the time we broke off our relationship.

At one point I decided to bring her some big sun flowers, just like the picture on the raisin box. They were doing well in their pots when I got them home. But I left the flowers in the car too long in the Virginia summertime heat. When I returned to retrieve them they had already wilted, much like our relationship.

The little identification tag on the flowers called them "Smiling Daisies."

lyrics

G - D/F# - Em - C
My sunflowers need staking
Cause I forgot them in the car
Tie my smiling daisy
To some sticks I found in the yard
But the phone's been buzzing
The dripping drone of days
And she changed her mind
And that's alright
I'll be just fine

Bm - Esus2 - G - D
G - D/F# - C - D
But if I were a dog
I'd walk and walk and walk
Just to be let back in
And be most happy about anything
And everything

She somehow resembles
The sun maiden
Apple bright
Cigarette red
Sun-dried raisins
If you please
Leave it on the porch
I'll leave the door unlocked
If you want to come inside

Still sitting on an apple and an orange
Like I'm not even there
Things ain't all that different
Even though I did cut my hair
Let's go have a picnic somewhere and see

I'll talk to you
If you'll speak with me
