about

I'm old school and love listening to albums in their entirety. I like to wind Harmonica Pocket albums down as they come to an ending and from the beginning I knew this lullaby would be the perfect album closer.

Ukulele Lullaby was originally written in 4/4 time. I liked the arc of the melody but the song was a little too vanilla. One day I sat down at the kitchen table with my uke and thumb wrestled this lullaby into 3/4. The song opened up and bloomed as it transitioned into this waltzy vibe.

I wrote the song in C major which is a pretty common key signature on the concert ukulele. To carve out a little space in my upper vocal range I tuned the uke down a half step so it's actually recorded in B major.

I love how sparse the arrangement is. Jon Rÿser is a wonderful Seattle-based horn player, arranger and all around awesome human being. Jon's luscious saxophones swell into the mix on the line "Every note is a dream" and his instrumental bridge harmonies lift the song into a new dreamy space.

An unexpected pandemic reunion on this album was with former Harmonica Pocket drummer Lorne Watson. Lorne and I gigged around Seattle in the early 2000s, made two records together before he moved to New York City and then back to the Upper Peninsula Michigan. One night while I was working on the album I had a dream about Lorne. I reached out to get in touch and the conversation ended with him agreeing to virtually bang his drums for the band again! Lorne is so solid on the drums. He also plays percussion instruments you probably cannot pronounce on Sand Song and One Two I Love You.

lyrics

Fall asleep
Under this melody
Simple and sweet
And free
Every note a dream
That sings you to sleep

Warm in bed as apple pie
Ukulele lullaby

Stars are bright
Open the window wide
Maybe they might decide
To come inside tonight
And be your night light

Soft as the light of a firefly
Ukulele lullaby

Fragile as a butterfly
Ukulele lullaby
