Vase grew out of a series of letters I was sending across the country with my friend M. She was going through some hard times in New York. I had just moved to Seattle and was bubbling over with the excitement of new people and a new corner of the continent.

I remember sitting out back of this house where some friends and I lived in Maplewood. The night was big, the stars were few and the freeway traffic was low constant drone. The city lights drowned out most of the starlight.

Sometimes the night feels beautiful and inspiring. Other times it's overwhelmingly sad. I don't know why.

I love the image of the engines hauling away time. And night's big dark body laying down across the sky.
