There was a big snowstorm during the Virginia winter of 1996. We got quite a bit of snow for Virginia and, except for the parties, everything shut down for a few days. My friend J was visiting from out of town at the time and we were snowed in together.

One night we were getting ready to go to a party. She was taking her time primping and strapped on a pair of high heels. I suggested she change into something a little more snow proof and we ended up getting into a fight about shoes. It was dumb.

We drove to the party in my little red car.

A couple hours later the cars outside were covered with a few inches of fresh snow and nobody was driving anywhere. I think there's like 6 snow plows in the state of Virginia. When it snows nobody in the state knows what to do.

We ended up crashing at the party and J was upset because there was nowhere comfortable for us to sleep and I was annoyed because we couldn't walk home in J's high heels. We had another totally stupid fight.

I'm always surprised which songs people end up liking. They're often not my personal favorite songs, and Waiting For A Shovel is one of these. It's not that I dislike the song, it's just not my favorite.

The version of Waiting For A Shovel on the album Lemonbomb was recorded at my Dandrige Street house in Virginia sometime in 1996. Quite a few of my friends liked that original version and that prompted me to revisit the song with Lorne on Birds Falling from the Sky.
