Wee a Tilly was an accident of a song. I was eating breakfast and heard this melody in my head. I put down my fork and picked up my ukulele. The pentatonic melody was so clearly there, I just needed to find the chords underneath the tune. After I was satisfied I sat back down and finished my eggs.
The song has about a hundred verses, but I chose these three to show the passage of time. Something about the melody sounds old to me — like a tune my great grandfather might have hummed as he walked out to the barn on the Welsh countryside. After hearing a demo of the song, a musician friend of mine told me he Googled the lyrics, thinking it was an old Irish song that I'd dug up somewhere.
When it came time to design the album artwork I thought I'd like to picture a singing frog on the cover. As I was snooping around the internet I found a young Russian illustrator who makes simple and magical animations. Although there was a slight language barrier, St. Petersburg-based Ekaterina Bogdan and I collaborated on a music video for Wee A Tilly. Her work is beautiful and I love what she did with creating images for the song. They're the kind of paintings you want to shrink yourself down and climb inside of to explore the colorful woodsy landscapes.
lyrics
I caught a firefly
Wee a Tilly, Wee a Tilly
Firefly Wee a Tilly Ho
I caught a firefly
Wee a Tilly, Wee a Tilly
Firefly I'm a let you go
Day, night
Rain, shine
Apart, together
Love you forever
Summer's coming to an end
Wee a Tilly, Wee a Tilly
Summer's ending Wee a Tilly Ho
Summer's coming to an end
Wee a Tilly, Wee a Tilly
Summer's ending I'm a let you go
Day, night
Rain, shine
Apart, together
Love you forever
Snow falling on my tongue
Wee a Tilly, Wee a Tilly
Snow falling Wee a Tilly Ho
Snow falling on my tongue
Wee a Tilly, Wee a Tilly
Some things you can never hold like
Day, night
Rain, shine
Apart, together
Love you forever
